ABSTRACT: Two types of strongly basic anion exchange resins; comprising a macroporous, standard type 1 resin and a nitrate selective resin (PA 202) were applied to the treatment of shallow well groundwater contaminated with 100 mg·L-1 of both nitrate and sulphate and 15 mg·L-1 phosphate. Although the total exchange capacity expressed in equivalents per unit resin weight was higher at the standard type resin, nitrate anion efficiency was only moderate because these resin absorbed larger amounts of sulphates, bicarbonates and phosphates. The nitrate-selective anion exchange resin showed higher operating capacity for nitrate removal when sulphate concentration in the treated water was equal to or higher than nitrate. Nitrate and sulphate were removed almost completely by the anion exchanger at the beginning of the service cycle,. The nitrate-selective resin did not take up nitrate exclusively but eluent sulphate concentration gradually increased almost immediately from the start of the operating cycle. The nitrate selective resin did not affect the phosphate concentration in treated water.
