ABSTRACT: In the period of 1987 – 1988, a structural–hydrogeological borehole FPJ-1 Oravska Polhora was drilled into the depth of 2 417 m bellow the ground surface. Original purpose of the project was to bring out the sufficient discharge volume of new iodine-brome groundwater sources. Such type of groundwater occurred in the broader area for a long time in the form of small springs and wells, but was not able to yield enough water for curative purposes. The borehole was successful in reaching the iodine-brome groundwater reservoir, but also brought a new geological information about the flysh unites below the Magura nappe. Hence, also geological settings and tectonics of the broader area of the geological description are summarized in this paper. The hydrogeological character of the rocks revealed by the borehole, results of the borehole hydrodynamic testing and hydrogeochemical character and genesis of the iodine-brome groundwater are described in detail.
