ABSTRACT: The Dobšiná Ice Cave belongs to the most important ice caves in the world that occurs in the temperate climate zone, in the mid-mountain part of the Western Carpathians. The cave is filled by ice with a volume of more than 110,000 m3. The water in the cave is in the form of dripping water, smaller lakes and ice. In the years 2019 – 2021 Slovak Caves Administration and Faculty of Natural Sciences Comenius University Bratislava, carried out chemical and microbiological research of the water in the Dobšiná Ice Cave. This article presents the results of hydrochemical part of the research, which is based on the chemical analysis and interpretation of 53 taken water samples. The results of water sampling indicate a relatively homogeneous character in terms of their overall chemical composition, without obvious spatial variability of the determining chemical parameters. No significant differences were identified between the ice and non-ice parts. The cave waters are characterized by the basic distinct Ca-HCO3. The main ions in water are calcium and carbonates, the main process of forming the chemical composition of waters is the dissolution of carbonates. Waters are moderately mineralized with a TDS from 189 mg·L-1 to 370 mg·L-1. Cave water is supersaturated or in equilibrium with respect to calcite, undersaturated with respect to dolomite and gypsum. The water from melted ice taken from broken stalactites had very low TDS (19.4 mg·L-1 – 44.4 mg·L-1), similar to rainwater. The quality of cave water is relatively good, the most frequent undesirable increase in CODMn and ammonium values were observed.
