ABSTRACT: Organic pollutants in groundwater and rock can be transformed by application of oxidizing agents, with less toxic and more degradable products formed during this process. Laboratory studies highlighted the possibilities of hydrogen peroxide and ozone use to transform barely degradable organic compounds in industrial polluted soil. Our experiments demonstrate that oxidant application transforms organic compounds in polluted soil and leachate. Column experiment results showed that the organic compounds involved can be transformed and partly or completely degraded by oxidizing agents. Transformation of pollutants is affected by the following factors – temperature, preparation method, low oxidant stability, the length of exposure and the sample to oxidizing-agent ratio. We determined that application of these oxidants is most suitable for effective biodegradation.
