ABSTRACT: The perspective of the geothermal energy development possibilities is outlined in the paper. It is based on the latest knowledge and worked out for both - abroad and Slovak Republic, for the third century. In the world, geothermal energy ran ks to the first place among the renewable energy sources with the 52% ratio on electricity generation and 79.6% on direct use. However, 99.78% of the geothermal resources for electricity generation and 99.987% for direct use are still available. In Slovakia, geothermal boreholes verified 4.5% of the total thermal-energy potential of the geothermal sources, but only 2.3 % of the total potential are utilised. Ecological aspects of this renewable energy source utilisation are emphasised.
