ABSTRACT: Presented study reviews worldwide used approaches to management of contaminated sites and compares them with the approaches in Slovakia. The Ministry of the Environment indents to use the findings of the study as a base line material for preparation of new legislation documents addressing contaminated site management in Slovakia. The most crucial aspects of the contaminated site management - legislation framework, procedure for identification of contaminated sites, contamination criteria, initiation of remediation as well as the role of stakeholders and their liability are analyzed. Possibilities for implementation of these approaches into Slovak legislation are outlined.
