ABSTRACT: Determination of precipitation, evapotranspiration and runoff values for the hydrological balance and also the calculation of changes in water storage for the Ľupčianka catchment are presented in this paper. The values of the hydrological balance of the Ľupčianka catchment were determined by two methods; the classical equation of water balance, in the form of the relationship between changes in storage, precipitation, evapotranspiration and runoff; and also by employing the BILAN hydrological model. The evapotranspiration and runoff values estimated by these methods registered similar results, where: (1) the BILAN evapotranspiration estimated value was 33% of yearly precipitation and the hydrological balance equation recorded 34%, and (2) the BILAN runoff estimation was 67% of yearly precipitation, while the hydrological balance equation registered 59%. The results for water storage change obviously differ. A possible explanation for the positive change in storage documented by the hydrological balance equation could lie in hidden inflows to the Ľupčianka stream from the adjacent catchment of the Kľačianka brook.
