ABSTRACT: The index of contamination (extent of pollution) - Cd (Backman et al., 1998) is well-known helpful criteria for the evaluation of the groundwater quality. But the index of contamination does not take into consideration toxicity of individual components and Cd lays stress on the size of overstepping normative values. The coefficient of contamination range Kr, which we used in our investigation, is additional criteria for the evaluation of groundwater quality, too, but Kr lays stress on the toxicity of individual components and number of overstepping normative values. Advantages of the Kr application are direct relation to scheme of earmarking of classes of groundwater quality during the compilation of the natural water quality map and seriousness of contamination is clear at first sight from the value of Kr. We applied Kr on the evaluation of the groundwater quality in Lučenec - Rimava basin.
